Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood
Projects 2009-2010
Bucks for Books
A reading program developed by Former First Lady Pat Fordice. This summer reading program encourages elementary children to read by using monetary incentives. After a summer of reading, children are ready to enter school with broader minds.
Clothing Corner/Outreach
New clothing is purchased for children who are recommended by school counselors each year. Project committee members deliver the clothes to the schools. The project provides new outfits, undergarments, socks, shoes and coats for the children. Outreach provides food, clothing, medicine and monetary support for needy children on an emergency basis.
Crown Club
High School sophomore and junior girls from Leflore County work together to carry out service projects. They are required to maintain a “B” average and perform 20 hours of community service throughout the year.
PALS
PALS (Providing Aid, Lending Support) was adopted in 2008 to establish an ongoing relationship with a family or families who just need an extra boost to help break the cycle of dependency. This project provides for the basic necessities of life, such as food, encouragement and budgeting needs. Each member of the Chapter is encouraged to contribute at least 1 service hour to this project each year.
Pediatric Playroom
Children at Greenwood Leflore Hospital benefit from this room that is equipped with toys, VCR’s, books, and activities. This program makes a child’s stay at the hospital a more positive one. Members work closely with the hospital’s Child Life Coordinator to be sure the room is equipped and maintained for the benefit of the children.
Puppet Pals
Puppet characters teach children that they should be nice to others, not talk to strangers and other life lessons through a group of funny, entertaining and lively puppet shows. The shows are conducted through the fall and spring at area elementary schools.
Reality Check
This hands-on simulation gives 7th-10th graders the opportunity to get a brief and fun taste of reality and glance into the future. They are encouraged to make wise lifestyle choices from buying groceries and paying bills, to paying for daycare, cars and cable.
Scholarship
College scholarships are awarded each year by a panel of non-Junior Auxiliary judges to area high school seniors based on need, academic performance, community and civic involvement and an interview.
S.T.A.R.S.
S.T.A.R.S. (Studying Together and Revealing Smiles) is a one-on-one weekly mentoring program that was designed to enhance self-esteem to young girls with academic tutoring and social counseling through positive reinforcement. The girls are chosen by the school counselor of the school that participates.
Too Good For Drugs
This program, which is taught to sixth graders at area schools, teaches self esteem and the adverse effects of drugs and alcohol. The class benefits from a 10 week course in which the same group of Junior Auxiliary teachers work closely with a particular class so that a bond is built with the students. This trust helps students open up about situations they may be facing in their own lives.
Too Good For Violence
This program focuses on ways to settle confrontations without violence by offering constructive ways to deal with anger management and conflict resolution to elementary school children in area schools.
